Cancellations and Rescheduling

These are the rules for lessons. They were developed in response to real situations and are the minimum necessary for so that we can continue to teach. Please respect them and do not ask for exceptions!

  • If, for whatever reason, you can’t come to the lesson at the time we agreed at the beginning of the month, and you give your teacher at least 24 hours notice, we will try to reschedule the lesson, preferably at a different time on the same day. For students with weekly lessons in Palo Alto or San Francisco, the make-up lesson would probably have to be in Berkeley. All rescheduled lessons must take place within the same calendar month. In addition, you can only reschedule once.

  • If you have an emergency and contact your teacher with less than 24 hours notice, you should assume you will forfeit the lesson unless another student is able to swap times (see below). Please, as a courtesy, call your teacher on the cellphone (415-860-8084) to tell us about the problem rather than just not showing up. In addition, if you forget, you will forfeit the lesson.

  • To accommodate students who have last minute emergencies and request a change to their lesson time, or if there is a last minute dropout and there is a gap in the schedule that cannot be used, your teacher may ask you to change your lesson time. If that is not possible, just say no, and that is fine. This is requested as a courtesy so that you can rely on the same degree of flexibility if you need to change. Please try to avoid time changes unless absolutely necessary.

  • If your teacher can’t come to the lesson at the time we agreed, we will try to reschedule sometime within the calendar month. If that’s not possible, you can either be repaid the cost of the lesson, or if you are continuing to be a student, use the money towards the cost of a lesson in the next month.

  • If you are absent for the last lesson of the month and you don't contact your teacher to say that you are dropping out, it is assumed that you are continuing. At that point, put a check in the mail to your teacher (ask for the address). If you drop out after the start of the new calendar month (i.e. after time has been set aside in the schedule for you), you will be asked for payment for that month.

  • At the start of your second lesson, you will be asked to sign and date a printed copy of this page to acknowledge that you have read this and agree to these conditions.
